Meet the Island That Inspired Tunda & Onyx

July 8, 2025      Sabrina K. Marshall

The Rock, a magical island where the animated series, Tunda & Onyx, takes place, isn't just a backdrop. It’s a vibrant nod to Jamaica, rich with culture, stories, and rhythms that shaped my own childhood and continue to inspire me today.

When I set out to create this series, I knew I wanted it to be more than entertaining. I wanted it to be rooted in my culture, from the lush forests of the Blue Mountains to the crystal waters of the Caribbean sea. Jamaica is bursting with legends, rhythmic sounds, and traditions that deserve a worldwide stage.

Characters Inspired by Island Roots

Tunda & Onyx is more than a tale of two pups who are polar opposites and best friends. Tunda, the nerdy go-getter, and Onyx the street-smart wisecracker, are on a mission to prove themselves as junior guard dogs in the hopes of one day being promoted to senior guard dog status. But at its core, the series is a reflection of Jamaican values like courage, hope, and friendship.

Their guide and wise mentor, Mr. Kingston, is inspired by not only the capital of Jamaica, but real-life elders in the community, grounded in tradition and full of stories passed down from generation to generation.

Even our villains like Rex, a power-hungry outsider, and Alphie, his posh British bulldog nephew, are infused with personality and depth, showing how different cultural influences like the UK interact with the fabric of the island.

A World Built on Jamaican Magic

From the music to the patois, Tunda & Onyx is blended with authentic Jamaican flavor, but it’s designed to be universal, so that kids everywhere can laugh, learn, and connect with the heart of the storylines, no matter where they’re from.

My goal is to weave in cultural references naturally, letting the story speak for itself through fun, adventures, and heartfelt moments.

As we raise funds to bring the pilot episode to life, we’re not just building a show, we’re sharing a piece of Jamaica with the world. One that kids can laugh with, learn from, and imagine themselves in.
